A gastric bypass, which we will do laparoscopically is creating a small pouch from the very beginning of the stomach. That pouch is then drained by the small intestine which is divided and brought up to the pouch. This does a number of things: It limits how much a patient can eat at one time, it takes their hunger away, and it also creates a small amount of malabsorption for the first few months after surgery. This creates a situation that has a very good weight loss.
